Gain Insights about Coral Reef Health Through our Interactive Data Map
Explore the analyzed coral reef data on the interactive map. Click on location pins to view detailed information about coral health, including bleaching rates, biodiversity levels, and more. This data, derived from the image analysis of photos and videos uploaded by Atierra members, updates with new contributions. Current analyses are based on relative comparisons with collected data, and we aim to provide deeper insights as we receive more data.
Rewarding Divers for Climate Action in Coral Reef Monitoring
Divers Choose Coral Reef Sites from Anywhere in the World
Divers can monitor coral reef sites worldwide, from Okinawa, Japan, to the USA, Thailand, Madagascar, and beyond. Though covering less than 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs sustain 25% of all marine species, providing vital food, shelter, and breeding grounds. Collective monitoring of these global sites is crucial to track reef health and address threats from human activities such as pollution, sedimentation, overfishing, and climate change.
Divers Capture Photos and Videos on Underwater Excursions
Divers capture photos and videos during snorkeling or diving excursions using any underwater camera, from smartphones and GoPros to professional setups. Media can include wide-angle and macro shots or videos of hard and soft coral clusters, top-down views of coral formations, and marine life around the reefs.
Divers Upload Media via Atierra's Data Entry Portal
Divers join Atierra as members to upload raw, unedited photos and videos through the data entry portal, accompanied by details such as site coordinates, dates, and notes. They can share both past and current data, typically uploading 3–5 photos per site in formats like PNG, JPG, or TIFF (72–100 dpi) and MP4 videos under 100 MB.
Atierra Rewards Divers with Points and Reports Data Insights
Atierra analyzes photos and videos uploaded by members and displays the results on an interactive map, offering insights into coral health, bleaching rates, biodiversity, and other key climate change indicators over time. To recognize diver contributions, Atierra awards points: 10 to sign up, 10 per photo, and 30 for a 30-second video. Members can track their points and soon convert them into climate rewards. Atierra is in the process of partnering with leading organizations to leverage the collected data for advancing research and conservation efforts.
