Air-to-Art collaboration transforms carbon pollution into luxurious black pigment for paper and canvas.

Tacoma, USA and Okinawa, Japan, January 14th 2025

American materials startup Homeostasis and Japanese open-source collective Atierra are partnering through the Air-to-Art project to offer (mark), a black pigment powder made from carbon dioxide (CO2). This first-of-its-kind initiative fosters collective action between technologists, artists, and collectors to remove CO2 from our atmosphere through the transformative power of visual art. Every gram of (mark) represents 3.7 grams of permanently captured carbon pollution.

(mark) by Homeostasis can be used as a charcoal powder for drawings, paintings, and more. Unlike most fine arts charcoal powder, (mark) has a category-leading carbon content of 99% and provides a rich black tone and smooth application.

Through this partnership, Homeostasis will produce the pigment with their proprietary reactor and Atierra will oversee marketing and retail operations. The waitlist for (mark) is officially open, allowing artists, illustrators, and other creative professionals in the United States and Japan to register at no cost. Payments will begin in February 2025, with deliveries scheduled for spring 2025.

“We are building the most resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective supply of carbon materials on the planet by synthesizing it from CO2,” said Homeostasis Co-Founder and CEO Makoto Eyre. “We believe that restorative carbon removal can help bring balance to our world and that a planet in balance would be a thing of beauty. We’re overjoyed to know that our new artist’s material will help make beautiful things.”

Through the Air-to-Art Project, Atierra is developing certification protocols for artists who incorporate materials derived from CO2 into their artworks. Certified artists will be able to sell their creations on Atierra’s platform at a premium, providing collectors with an exclusive opportunity to own art made with CO2 removed from our atmosphere.

“At Atierra, we strive to make climate action not just impactful but also seamlessly rewarding,” said Shivani Sathish, Co-founder at Atierra. “By partnering with Homeostasis, we are empowering artists to be recognized and rewarded for their climate action while enabling collectors to own tangible solutions that combat climate change.”
